INNER CITY SCHOOL KIDS HIT THE ROAD AND STRIKE GOLD

Bill Gillies of Pamicon Developments Ltd was inspired by a conversation he had on the bus one morning in 2007 with Doug Sherrett. Doug teaches grades 6 & 7 in Vancouver’s Down Town East Side, at Lord Strathcona Elementary school. Bill decided to set out on a campaign to raise money and send 3 bus loads of Lord Strathcona's students to the BC Museum of Mining!

The project was such a great success, so well received by the mining community that Bill contacted me to schedule a tour for another group of students this year.

The students who are currently studying Geology were featured on City TV’s Breakfast Television! With the school being located in a low income neighborhood, it is not often these students are able to go on a field trip, never mind a journey through the winding mountain roads of BC’s west coast, alongside beautiful Howe Sound and up into historic Britannia Beach for an action packed day of exploration!

While they were here, the students also met with our Curator of Education, Diane Mitchell, who conducted a mineral presentation following a gold panning activity. The students panned for real gold that they would keep as a souvenir of their trip along with mineral samples and books presented to the students by the Museum’s gift shop. Then, it was time for a photo opportunity with the students in front of the giant yellow dump truck, which marks the entrance to the museum.

This memorable day that all of the students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed was made possible by the generosity of the following sponsors:

Abacus Mining and Exploration Corp.
Association of Mineral Exploration of British Columbia.
Capstone Mining Corp.
Goldbrook Ventures.
International Stage Lines Inc. (Buses)
Yukon-Nevada Gold Corp.
Silverstone Resources Corp.
Redcorp Ventures Ltd.
Constantine Metal Resources Ltd.
Resource World Magazine.
