Britannia Beach was a company-owned town and accessible only by steamship until 1956. Therefore, the townsfolk developed a vast array of activities and entertainment to keep themselves busy. Social calendars were so full, that the company’s annual report in 1954 noted that “It is becoming a real problem to find dates that do not conflict.” 

A movie theatre/ playhouse was built in 1916 and over the decades it hosted dozens of community events. By 1958 it was used for union meetings, reflecting both the importance of the recreational facilities at Britannia and the changing social nature of the town. There were originally three movie theatres located at Britannia: at the Beach, Barbara Camp, and the Mt. Sheer Townsite. The Beach Movie Theatre is the only one remaining and remains among the oldest structures at Britannia, surviving the 1921 flooding of Britannia Creek.
